Duromine and Health Issues

I have thought about Xenical but also heard it can have "nasty"side effects although you just put in a much clearer perspective. Thank you!:laughing:

I posted this on one of my previous threads, but thought that this could be useful for other women finding it tough to lose that weight! (sorry to the guys out there, but this is a bit of a hardware-specific issue )

I haven't been on here for a while. I guess I have been a bit lazy, plus I got hit with 2x bouts of Gastro (Gotta love the viruses the kids bring home from school = aka = "the public petrie-dish system"). Seeing as you should not take Duramine during these times, it appears my first month worth of Duramine has been lasting longer than 30 days.

I am still awaiting my 2nd real period since having surgery to remove an IUD which punctured my uterus and caused an infection. I'm really not all that surprised that my period is 30+ days later than it should be; such is the nature of dealing with PCOS. The annoying part about it is that my breasts have been seriously enlarged (which is met with much elation from my fiancé lol) but are super tender (not his fondest part of this effect) and my bra's are not coping well with keeping me in. My abdomen is bloated and enlarged and cramping is ever present. But this has been happening for about 2 weeks now, and every day I expect to get the red devil, and every day - nothing.

As such, measurements and weigh-ins have stopped for some time. I can't trust either to be an accurate representation of where I am situated within my weight-loss journey. It's actually driving me quite mad, and quite disheartened to say the least.

But even so, I have also become a little disheartened with the slow loss as opposed to the rather rapid loss I am seeing in other Duromine users. I chalked it up to a couple of things:
  1. A lower starting weight, thus less to lose;
  2. The sporadic use of duramine due to ill health; or
  3. PCOS causing me to battle with weight retention.
Being the google fanatic that I am, and knowing my issues with PCOS (also responsible for my facial hair growth, skin tags, easy weight gain, disrupted ovulation/menstrual cycles, and anxiety/depression - cool huh?), I started looking into Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) calculators. We all know about BMI, and how annoying and disheartening they can be. We are all trying to lead healthier lives with exercise and healthy eating. But I always wondered why I have never been able to eat a regular caloric/balanced diet without continuously gaining weight! Even on Duromine, my diet and exercise only results in a small amount of weight loss. Could I have my BMR wrong???

So, I found one of many BMR calculators which are ever available on the world wide web. (For those who are unsure of what this calculation provides, it is the minimum number of calories that your body requires in order to sell sustain. It is initially calculated on age, sex, current height and weight, but is further adjusted for level of exercise per day). Now, this is a result of what it takes JUST TO EXIST. The idea is that any caloric input over this number will produce an excess of energy that is likely to be stored as fat. In order to lose weight, you consume this calculated number, and rely on exercise to place you at a caloric deficit = thus equating to weight loss. Here is my result from Calculator.net:

BMR = 1,522 Calories/day
I can NOT, for the life of me, remember a time that consuming this many calories has EVER resulted in weight loss. So a bit more researching led me to a study of PCOS with respect to BMR: Basal metabolic rate.

This article is presented as an abstract online, but as I am a Geology PhD student through QUT, I have access to databases and full-text articles, so I have been able to read the entire study. It was quite a robust study, actually. (File Attached - hopefully!!) Three groups were presented:
  1. Women without PCOS
  2. Women with PCOS (Not Insulin Resistant)
  3. Women with PCOS (Insulin Resistant)
Long story short - Women with PCOS (both groups) have a naturally lower BMR than those without. Those WITH insulin resistance had a BMR lower than those without PCOS by 700 calories!!!!! Those WITHOUT insulin resistance had a BMR lower than those without PCOS by about 550 calories!.

I don't know about you, but that seems particularly significant to me. It finally shows me that all that hard work I had been putting in, to no avail, was NEVER going to cut it. It wasn't all in my head!!!

"But what has this got to do with Duromine, Amber???"

Well! I am glad you asked, and I will tell you now.
  • Women with PCOS, are clearly set up for failure from the get go due to their lower BMR - regardless of Insulin resistance or not. 550 calories (for anyone watching their diet) equates to an entire meal! And not only that, but we all know that not all calories are created equal. So this throws a massive spanner in the works!!!
  • You don't have to have PCOS to be insulin resistant! Infant, excessive weight gain alone can invoke insulin resistance!
  • You may have a hormonal imbalance caused by weight gain (one can trigger the other - it's hand in hand!)
  • Weight gain can invoke PCOS (instead of the other way around), and thus you may want to get your doctor to run a hormone check on you!
These could be potential reasons why we do not all lose our weight as rapidly as others on Duromine. Our unique body chemistry dictates how our systems run. Duromine helps to reduce appetite, but is also works synchronous with our BMR - our adrenaline and our capacity to burn more energy than we otherwise would.

Food for thought!

Hey, this was very interesting to me, thank you for sharing it.
I have PCOS and am unfortunately insulin resistant... I also had an eating disorder as a teen so my metabolism is not good with all those factors. However I am hopeful that duromine will help. :)

Hello everyone,

What a great forum. I really enjoy reading everyone's experiences, accomplishments & advice.

I've a broken my leg so I can't exercise until it's healed. I'm out of action for about 6-8 weeks. My GP gave me 40mg Duromine. I'm wondering if exercise is all that important or can I get away with simply taking 40mg of duromine a day and eating healthy small vegetarian meals & still lose weight without exercise? I've gained 16kg this year due to eating pizza, pasta & fast food as I've returned to school & have been sitting in a classroom all day for a year. I'm 50 years old. Will I still lose weight? I record my food & Im on about 1200 calories a day. Started duromine this week. I used them years ago with great success, kept the weight off for 10 years. Any advice would be appreciated as I feel there's no point taking them if they don't work without exercise included?

Thank you.

Hi Deecat, nice to meet you;)
Well, you have reasonable concerns. I'm glad you've asked. Indeed, high physical activity means a lot for a good weight loss. It's simple math: low calorie consumption, high fat burn. But I've noticed that not only physical activity can burn calories, in fact brain work also makes your body lose energy, naturally:laughing: Although exercices are preferable paired with healthy diet for faster and greater weight loss, I believe that you still can lose some weight without exercises, but much slower of course. You mentioned a broken leg, ie the rest of your body is fine, so you still can move some muscles just to tone your body up. Plus, make sure you read, or do any other activity (work, even on PC) throughout the day, until you feel tired. It works! I used to work full time at the office and man, I got so tired by the end of the day that sometimes I even missed my meals.
Do I think it's pointless to take Duromine in your case? I wouldn't say for sure. The pills do a great job by suppressing the appettite, and if you have that issue, then of course you need it to start minimizing your meal portions. On the other hand, if you think you can handle your appetite on your own, then you don't need the pills, just start healthy diet and do some light exercises with your arms, neck, chest and you'll go fine.
I hope I helped you a little bit and you'll find the right solution for your situation.;)
P.S. Still don't get it why your gp gave you 40mg for a start?..o_O

Hello,
So I've struggled with my weight for quite some time. I'll lose a good amount but then just gain it back due to poor eating.
I've had a major wake up call though after being diagnosed with early onset osteoarthritis in my knee. I'm in severe pain and my specialist has suggested surgery to look into it. Before doing anything drastic I'm doing physio and have started on Duromine in an effort to shift some weight (I'm 81kg but should be around 65kg). Exercise at this stage is impossible although I'm still trying to stay active doing gentle walking etc. Wish me luck!

Hi Anka,
I've only just joined this forum. I'm in a similar situation. I've got 2 slipped disks and a heap of compressed disks and two different Dr's told me the disk compression is from my belly. I started at 97 kg, lost 15 with good diet calorie counter (fitness pal) and weight training 3x a week. Then got new Dr and scans and I'm stuck with just walking and the weight started to creep up again. So now I'm on day 3 with duramine. I should be about 57kg being very short. Let's focus on what we can do not what we can't all the best of luck to you!!! Here's to being pain free asap!!!

Hi Anka! Welcome to the forum! I am very sorry you have to struggle with pain. I wish you all the luck in your weight loss journey. Will keep my fingers crossed for your success and pain alleviation. How do you feel so far?

hey All

I was diagnosed with Graves' disease in February and have been on medication since, my thyroid is back into normal range now. My doctor said it's up to me if I wanted to go on duromine but he said it can affect my thyroid again. Can anyone shed some light? I would really love to start using it to start my weight loss journey

Thanks

Hello Angii1990! Welcome to the forum, and no matter the outcome, I wish you a successful weight loss journey, with or without Duromine. If your doctor is a general practitioner, and not an endocrinologist, I would strongly advise you to consult an endocrinologist. If he is, you will probably need to go through frequent regular controls, if you decide to take Duromine. In your case, doctors know what’s the best way to act. Not a single person here can tell you for sure, what you should do. Good luck, though! Don’t despair!

Hi Anka! How is it going?

Hello! It's going really well! Its almost week 4 and down to 71kg. The scales at the doctors said 81kg starting weight but my scales said 77kg so a bit hard to determine what exactly I've lost so far but overall happy. My clothes are looser and my knee pain is more manageable so things are definitely working. I must admit that I'm forgetting to eat especially for the past few days and I know this is really bad so I'm starting to set reminders on my phone to prompt me to eat. My first mini goal is to get under 70kg so almost there!

Woohooo!!! So, it’s either you lost 6 kg, or 10 kg in 4 weeks? =)) Both numbers are pretty impressive and I congratulate you with a great weight loss and all health benefits that it brought you! Especially pleasant it is to hear that your knee is doing better. Are you going for further months on Duromine, or it’s just one?

Setting reminders to eat is a great idea, and I am glad you do realize that you should eat to lose weight consistently. Wish you to smash the first mini goal and set a new one, where your health condition allows you to introduce a bit more physical activity, which is always beneficial. Hope your knee feels better each day and weight loss results keep you motivated to move further! Cheers!

Hi Anka! How did this week go for you? Any active plans for the weekend? Hope, it will be a nice one! Take care

Hi, I am wanting to start Duromine 15mg - I am a epiletic and diabetic, please advise...I have gone to see a doctor who said he would give me a script as I have not had a seizure in over 5 years however he is letting me know that Duromine can bring on a seizure...Id like to know if anyone else on this forum is epileptic and on Duromine

Weight is 90kg
Height is 172cm
Goal weight is 70kg

Hello, Muldery25. Duromine is a very potent drug and I frankly have no idea whether it is safe to take it when you have epilepsy. Sounds quite worrisome. I did not read a single story of a person with your condition and on Duromine, so it’s very hard to say how everything turns out. Do you have people around you all the time? If you do start Duromine and something happens… will there always be someone to help you?

You should also ask your doctor if your medication (are you on any drug for epilepsy) does not have any interactions with Duromine. Duromine is a CNS stimulant, so…

Either way, I wish you best of luck and even if you don’t take Duromine, you can still post in this forum and go through a weight loss process. People here are very supportive. Take care
